Description

What is Difflam Spray?
Difflam Spray contains the active ingredient benzydamine hydrochloride, which belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Difflam Spray works by stopping pain and swelling (inflammation) in the mouth or throat, including: mouth ulcers, teething, sore throat, sore tongue or gums, and discomfort associated with dentures or dental work.

How to use this product
Always use Difflam Spray exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / pharmacist has told you. Do not use Difflam Spray in or near your eyes. If any spray gets in your eyes, wash them immediately with cold water.

For adults, adolescents and elderly, spray 4 – 8 puffs to the sore area every 1½ to 3 hours. For children between 6-12 years of age, spray 4 puffs to the sore area every 1½ to 3 hours. For children under 6 years of age, spray 1 puff for every 4 kilograms of body weight, up to a maximum of 4 puffs to the sore area every 1½ to 3 hours.

To use the spray, hold the bottle in an upright position and lift the spray-tube to 90 degrees until it’s horizontal. Do not raise the spray-tube more than shown in the patient information leaflet. The first time you use the spray you need to prime it. Point the spray-tube away from your face and press down firmly on the green plunger until a fine spray appears from the end. The spray is now ready to use.

Aim the spray-tube at the sore part of your mouth or throat and press down on the green plunger again. One press releases one puff. After spraying the desired number of puffs, wipe the end of the spray-tube with a tissue, this helps to stop it becoming blocked. Push the spray-tube back down, as this stops any puffs being accidentally released. Do not push anything into the end of the spray-tube if it becomes blocked.

What causes a sore throat?
A sore throat can present many symptoms – it might feel scratchy, dry, tender, itchy, or have a raw, burning sensation, typically when you talk or swallow. Your throat and tonsils may be swollen, red, or have white spotting.

A sore throat is very common and is usually caused by a cold or flu virus, which will go away on its own. It could also be caused by bacteria, which you may need treatment for if your symptoms don’t improve.

Is Difflam Spray suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.

When should this product not be used?
Difflam Spray may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this spray if you are allergic to benzydamine hydrochloride or any of the other listed ingredients. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have any of the following:

A history of asthma
If you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs
If you’re taking any other medicines

Are there any side effects?
Like all medicines, Difflam Spray may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. Side effects may include numbness and/or stinging in the mouth and/or throat.

For more information on potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
